Sewer Rats

Away from the bustling docks, distant from an alehouse fireside, far underneath those ancient Mirgrade walls- that's where Jerrak saw it. The size of a young adult man  with a gaunt build of corded muscle and patches of short bristly fur, the rat man sprinted across an overhead walkway. It stopped, frozen still as it realized Jerrak was watching. Beady red eyes scanned Jerrak and then it started its run again, this time with Jerrak in pursuit.

Shortly after quarantine ended a sale popped up on amazon for an Anycubic photon. I've been eyeing 3d printers for a long time and the Anycubic photon line was one of the ones that I thought about being my first purchase. Despite space considerations I made my purchase and have been printing whenever I can since. Here's the first print that I did after my test print!

The miniature is a wererat from Loot Studios and the base is from Aguilen. I am typically not a fan of the whole "skaven" type of monster and setting but painting this print and base got me inspired to maybe come up with an adventure set amongst the sewers of Mirgrade. Every DM has to run a city sewer session, it's practically law. I painted up the rat rather quickly, using contrast wherever I could. I actually paid more attention to the base as I wanted to really sell the effluvium stained flagstones look. To tie it all together I hit the whole thing with a burnt umber oil wash. Too easy.

I painted "Jerrak" next. This miniature is from the Guilds of Cadwallon board game. Originally the miniature had spiky pauldrons and another blade instead of a shield but the pose screamed gladiator to me and I think the typical gladiator look includes a shield. Nothing really special when it comes to painting this one up. In fact, I exclusively used contrast paints aside for the metals and some very quick highlighting on his skirt.

3D printing has been a blast getting into so far and I love how many options it gives me. I can spend 15-30min browsing the internet for something I want to paint that weekend and I can have it for free if I'm lucky but for the cost of an expensive drink if it's a paid file. My print success rate has been about 70% but as I continue to learn more about the hobby I think it'll only be a matter of time before I'm at 100%.

Getting into this hobby and the sudden decrease in costs for accumulating miniatures has made me really want to either try to play some wargames with a 3D printed army or try and run an RPG adventure with fully 3D printed assets. I'm still looking to start up that rotating DM group I mentioned in my last post. I contacted my previous group and mentioned it to them but nobody said that they'd be interested. Bummer.

Next time I post you can expect quite a few things to be painted or on my painting table! Hopefully I also get the opportunity to play some games. Until next time!
